Corner Lab

Renault Clio R.S. V

Front-engined · Turbocharged I4 · Downforce 0/5

A short, front-drive cup car that asks the front tyres to brake, turn and pull the car out of the corner. It is eager to rotate when the rear is unloaded, then naturally pushes if the throttle arrives before the nose is pointed.

Protect the front tyre. Finish the rotation off-throttle, open the steering and only then ask it to accelerate.

Symptoms this car reads differently

Steps out on entry
The rear is lightly loaded under braking and a sudden release can make it rotate quickly. Slow the release before adding rear stability.
Pushes at the apex
The front axle is doing nearly all the work. A tighter steering input only adds temperature; give the car time to finish rotating.
Runs wide on power
Classic front-drive power understeer. Unwind the steering before committing to throttle rather than asking the loaded outside-front to do two jobs.
Falls off over the stint
The front tyres pay for every rushed entry and early throttle. Shorter inputs and a cleaner rotation preserve them.

What this car's answers lean on

Compared with other Production cars

  1. Free changes — driving, not setup
  2. Tyre pressures used more than on most cars like it
  3. Anti-roll bars used more than on most cars like it
  4. Braking system — bias, ABS, pressure
  5. In-car driver aids and gearing
  6. Camber, toe, caster
  7. Damper clicks
  8. Spring rates
